			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I use a few different techniques to clear away fears and negative emotions that clog up our systems. Meditation is one of the best ways to do this. I will sit down in a comfortable spot where I won&#8217;t be disturbed and take a few deep breaths.</p>
<p>Then I will focus on where the fear is in my body. Then I will just watch it. You may notice it change, or grow, move to a different part of your body or intensify. It may get a little uncomfortable, but just keep watching.</p>
<p>If you see it as something a little separate from you it can help that feeling. Just keep watching. You can ask the feeling what it&#8217;s there for, what it&#8217;s related to, etc. Then just wait for answers. Sit there as long you can and watch it.</p>
<p>You may have an emotional release, or maybe just take a deep breath to release some or all of the fear or emotions. This works great for anxiety. You may feel like getting up before it releases but see if you can stick it out.</p>
<p>After the release you will feel tons better! Keep doing this until the fear is completely gone. It may take a bit of work over some time, but if you keep at it, you can get great results.</p>

<p><strong>Reflexology is a system of healing</strong> that uses the  application of pressure to different reflexes or zones on the feet and  hands that correlate to areas of the body. The entire body is mapped to  the tops and bottoms of the feet and hands. Reflexology has been shown  in over 170 studies in 21 countries to effectively address a myriad of  physical and psychological concerns. Although modern science has not  proven exactly why it works, there have been studies using fMRI showing  that areas of the brain which correlate to the body area stimulated by  the corresponding reflex point on the foot, show more activity. Meditation!</strong></p>
<p>Meditation is the practice is focusing and quieting the mind so the  practitioner can get in touch with his/her own inner self. It quiets the  continuous chatter of our minds so we can actually hear our true selves  speaking. It allows us to get to the core of who we are.  It helps our  brains re-wire to work more calmly and smoothly. It helps with  depression, anxiety, stress, job performance, relationships, chronic  pain, everything! When we are centered and calm everything just works  better. In a recent university study, subjects were shown to have an  increase in brain gray matter in the study group with just an average of  27 minutes a day over 8 weeks! The regions of the brain that increased  are associated with learning and memory, emotion regulation,  self-referential processing and perspective taking.</p>
<p>Meditating regularly is not always an easy thing to accomplish. Most  of us feel we don’t even have the 10 or 20 minutes a day that we would  need in order to get quiet. I feel like that myself most days. But you  will find that if you take that 10 or 20 minutes every day that the day  goes much more smoothly. Your mind will work more efficiently. Events  that sent you into a tailspin previously barely register on your radar.</p>
<p>I found it extremely difficult to start meditating at first. I was  such a nervous Nelly that I couldn’t really sit still. I just wanted to  get up and do something! I felt like the TV. was much more interesting, I  was missing something or I just couldn’t calm my body. I was all  jittery and restless. This is where I found guided meditations to be  helpful. Guided meditations consist of the guide talking you through  relaxing and getting into a meditative state. They can help you get to  where you’re going much more easily and show you how to get there when  you’re on your own. And as a fairly practiced meditator I still enjoy  guided meditations to help me get past my own mind chatter more quickly  and explore different ways of meditating.</p>
<p>I am starting new, guided meditations every Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at  the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine. Every week we’ll get together  and clear and calm your minds and go on some fun explorations of your  inner worlds. It’s a great way to get started or to enjoy the energy of  meditating in a group.</p>

<p><strong>Lavender is known as the healing herb,</strong> possessing calming and relaxing properties as well as anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Following a lab explosion in which he severely burned his arm, French scientist Rene Gattifosse documented lavender&#8217;s ability to promote tissue generation. It heals and soothes cuts, bruises, burns, body aches and pains.</p>
<p><strong>Lavender oil can be safely applied to the skin</strong> as well as ingested. It can be directly applied to cuts, scrapes, insect bites or other skin irritations and can be added to milk, tea or food for internal use. <li>1995 (Zakay-Rones)- A double blind placebo controlled study was conducted during an outbreak of influenza B Panama. 93.3% of the cases treated with black elderberry compound saw a significant improvement of the symptoms. A complete cure was achieved within 2 to 3 days in nearly 90% of those treated with the black elderberry extract within two-three days, three days less than the placebo group.</li>
<li>2001 – (Barak, Halperin and Kalickman) 2 in-vitro studies have shown that extracts from black elderberry were beneficial to the stimulation of the immune system.</li>
<li>2004 –( Zakay-Rones) In a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study, black elderberry extract was shown to significantly reduce the duration of the flu by around four days. Significantly less people who were taking the extract took pain relievers compared to the placebo group.</li>
<li>2005 –(Balasingham ) During an in-vitro study carried out in London, black elderberry extract was found to be at least 99% effective against the H5N1 strain otherwise known as Avian Bird Flu.</li>

<p>Of all fruits elderberries have the most concentrated source of anthocyanins, a class of flavonoids that act as powerful antioxidants. Anthocyanins boost the production of cytokines, the proteins that act as messengers in the immune system. Cytokines are extremely important in the body&#8217;s response to infection.</p>
<p>The nice thing about elderberry extract is that it actually tastes great! Good for you and tastes good too! Here are two brands that I have tried and recommend. Sambucol was used in clinical trials and has that to back up it&#8217;s claims. Gaia herbs has a vegetarian and organic version for purists. Both work wonderfully!</p>
